Unlike Fairtrade International, the WFTO does not certify products but rather companies that commit to applying and complying with the principles set out below. The focus is on micro-producers, especially in the handicraft sector.
The ten principles are:
- Creating opportunities for economically disadvantaged producers
- transparency and accountability
- partnership trading practices
- payment of fair prices
- exclusion of exploitative child labor and forced labor
- gender equality, freedom of assembly, no discrimination
- ensuring good working conditions
- support for the development of competence and knowledge (“capacity building”)
- public relations and educational work for fair trade
- environmental protection
GEPA and El Puente Germany are certified by WFTO as fair producers and distributors.
